Suspected Al-Shabaab militants on Friday, July 14, attacked a police station in Mandera County and left behind a trail of death and destruction.
Reports noted that at least three people were killed in the attack, including two police officers who were in the company of a contingent of law enforcers during the night raid.
The attackers also killed a teacher who was working at a local Primary School. It was noted that the teacher was caught in the cross-fires between the police and the militants.
The suspected Al-Shabaab militant attempted to over-run Wargadud Police Station in Mandera as they staged a daring ambush on the police officers who were keeping watch over the small town.
Sources reported that the attack took place at 1 am when most of the residents were asleep.
The suspected Al-Shabaab militants managed to destroy the communication gadgets that were being used by the police officers, including a mast belonging to a local telecommunication firm.
A van that was being used by the police officers at Wargadud Police Station was also burnt down by the militants after a fierce battle that lasted almost one hour.
Wargadud police station is about 42 kilometers north of El-Wak town, and strategically located on the highway leading to Mandera County headquarters.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Monday, July 10, warned Kenyans of the threat of Al-shabaab, stating that the country was vigilant and watchful.
Kindiki noted that Kenyans will eventually defeat terrorists, revealing that he directed his security officers to deal swiftly and decisively with criminal elements from neighbouring countries.
On Thursday, July 13, the militants attacked a military base in Geriley, not far from El-Wak, in Gedo region of Somalia. The base was recently handed over by Kenya troops serving as part of the Africa Union (ATMIS).
