The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Sunday, July 16, cautioned of the increasing number of government officials and traders who were being duped by impersonators.

EACC warned members of the public to be wary of people purporting to be officers of the commission.

Additionally, Kenyans were warned not to give anyone money with a promise to change the course of a corruption case investigation.

“Most of the fraudsters call the suspects summoning them to hotels and other unconventional meeting places. EACC does not summon anyone outside its offices or a police station,” EACC warned.

Another pointer to identify a fraudster is if they call with claims that they are in the presence of an officer from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

The anti-corruption body noted that it does not summon people jointly with DPP and the only time the file is handed to the prosecutor is at the investigation stage.

“When EACC requires to summon a person, that is done through a formal process,” the agency noted.

The commission noted that the only time suspects would receive a call is as a follow-up on whether they received a formal summon or seeking clarification on a matter.

Lastly, EACC warned Kenyans that some fraudsters are daring such that they invite people to meet at Integrity Centre, the commission’s headquarters since the office is open to the public.

In some cases, it was noted that members were scammed at the parking lot of the Integrity Centre.

“We urge members of the public to be vigilant and if someone is a public official, EACC will only summon you through the hierarchy of the public service,” civil servants were advised.

According to EACC, it was regrettable how many Kenyans were ready to bribe their way out of perceived trouble.
