Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o on Monday, July 17, revealed that he underwent a successful spinal surgery at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu.

While giving an update, the second-term governor indicated that he was admitted on Friday, July 14, to undergo the scheduled operation, just two days after he led anti-government protests in the lakeside county.

He lauded the hospital staff for the hospitality and good care during his time at the facility.

"Everything has gone extremely well and I am grateful to the hospital CEO, Dr George Rae and his team for taking very good care of me," he noted.

The 77-year-old governor has been one of the most trusted lieutenants of veteran opposition politician Raila Odinga.

He has been open in the past about his health, well before he rose to the governor's position, especially his past successful battle with prostate cancer, which he was first diagnosed with in July 2010.

At the time, he was put on specialised hormonal treatment.

He flew to the United States to receive medical care at the University of California San Fransisco Medical Centre inside Mount Zion Hospital.

The governor has been in a battle against cancer champion together with his wife Dorothy Nyong'o.

While most public figures have in the past kept their health status under the wraps, Nyong'o in multiple interviews following the success of cancer surgery indicated that it was important for Kenyans to know to help create awareness.

"I decided to go public with my illness because it is not a private matter but a social one and it could have happened to anyone," he stated at the time.

At the time, he was serving as the Medical Service Minister and vowed to create systems locally for every Kenyan to access affordable, quality healthcare.

"Kenya is capable of handling such cases if all mechanisms in the medical sciences field are put in place," he stated.
