Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's drive to collect signatures on his recently launched website, Tumechoka, has crossed the 8.5 million mark.

The initiative, which was launched on Tuesday, July 11, revealed that 8,516,337 Kenyans had signed up to endorse the initiative of kicking President William Ruto out of office.

The figure is just 6,483,663 shy of the 15 million signatures the opposition aims to collect against the incumbent regime.

At the time of the launch, the former Prime Minister argued that the cost of living had continued going up since Ruto took over the reins and the introduction of a new roster of taxes would push more Kenyans below the poverty line.

Other leaders who attended the initiative's launch and subsequently signed the petition included principals Martha Karua (Narc-Kenya), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Eugene Wamalwa (Democratic Action Party) and former Murang'a governor Mwangi Wa Iria.

If the team hits the 15 million signatures mark, it will mark the first step for the opposition's intention to eject the President from office.

To successfully eject him, however, the team will need to legally file a petition through Parliament in line with the Constitution's provision.

Mass Protests

In their attempts to force the government to lower the cost of living, the opposition also launched a series of public protests across major towns in Kenya.

In the last week, the protests dominated Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa for a period of three days beginning Wednesday.

Azimio la Umoja is also slated to hold another countrywide protest on Wednesday, July 26, 2023.

In a statement read by Mwangi wa Iria, Azimio la Umoja noted that it will stage protests one day a week.

"We will be there to ensure that we force this government to listen to the people. We know that they intend to arrest and torture us but we will not relent," Wa Iria stated.
