Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday July 26, unveiled four pick up and drop points along the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line 2 at Kasarani terminal.

Murkomen noted that first phase of the Line will cover the Ruiru-Nairobi CBD-Kenyatta National Hospital route with the second phase stretching from Kenol through Ruiru and Bomas (Langata Road) to Rongai.

Additionally, the terminal, strategically situated near Kasarani Stadium, will offer a comprehensive range of amenities.

The amenities include a convenient Park and Ride zone, catering to motorists opting for BRT services. Additionally, there will be a designated matatu drop-off and pick-up zone to facilitate seamless transportation. The terminal will also house essential facilities such as a bus ramp and an efficient operations centre.

"We are working with the National Treasury to ensure prompt settlement of pending bills owed to the contractor to enable him resume work within the next two months with a target of December 2024 as the completion date," he stated.

The CS emphasised that the  BRT project is a key priority for the Kenya Kwanza Government as it will help streamline the public transport system covering Nairobi, Machakos, Kiambu, Kajiado and Murang'a counties.

The National Metropolitan Area Authority (NaMATA) - a State Agency under the Ministry tasked with coordinating the implementation of this project - is already working closely with Public Service Vehicle (PSV) owners and operators.

Implementation of the BRT project has previously stalled due to financial challenges. The corridor was initially set to be availed for public use in June 2022.

The project was revived by President William Ruto on March 30, 2023 after a meeting with Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission.

The first phase had dedicated two innermost lanes of the Thika Superhighway to high-capacity buses.

The project is expected to ease traffic in Nairobi and bolster Nairobi's transport system.
