Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday, July 28, drove himself to the Azimio la Umoja memorial service, which was held to honour those who lost their lives during the protests.

The service was held at the Stephen Kalonzo Command Centre in Karen.

Uhuru drove in minutes past 10:00 am in his Mercedes G-wagon and was joined by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who was driven in a separate car.

The duo was received by Kalonzo who was waiting together with other officials from the opposition coalition.

Also present at the event were Opiyo Wandayi, the National Assembly Minority Leader, and Fredrick Okango, the Secretary of Political Affairs for the KANU party.

This marked the former President's second appearance at a public Azimio meeting since the August 9 polls. His previous public Azimio meeting took place on September 7, 2022, during a gathering of opposition leaders elected within the coalition.

Azimio held a service to honor those who lost their lives during the anti-government protests. Earlier in the week, the opposition coalition held a vigil and asked its supporters to hold similar events across the country.

"We appeal to Kenyans to keep peace during these prayers. We also encourage Kenyans to continue lighting candles and laying flowers in respect and love for our slain and injured patriots.

"We take this early opportunity to thank all those who turned out yesterday to keep vigil, light candles and lay flowers in honour of those who lost their live and the injured. This exercise continues through the weekend," Azimio stated at the time.

It is expected that the Azimio bigwigs will issue directions on their next course of action during the service.

Uhuru's decision to attend the service at the Stephen Kalonzo Command Centre came one week after the former Head of State addressed the media shortly after Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers raided his son's residence in Karen.
