Police officers on the night of Saturday, July 30, seized a Toyota Premio that had earlier evaded a roadblock along a road in the Kanga area, Mombasa County.
A statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) indicated that the vehicle was ferrying narcotics destined for Mombasa City.
DCI noted that the vehicle, which had two occupants, defied orders to stop and fled forcing police officers to mount a speed chase.
During the speed chase, however, the car veered off the road, hit a tree, and landed in a ditch a few kilometers away.
"The two occupants immediately disembarked from the car and fled into thickets inside the Tsavo National Park," read part of the statement.
Following the incident, police seized the vehicle and towed it to Mtito Andei Police Station and a manhunt was launched to apprehend the suspects.
Police also seized the drugs as evidence in the case which was part of a wider attempt by gangs to conceal drugs and transport them across regions without detection.
On July 26, DCI's Anti Narcotics Unit (ANU) intercepted suspected narcotics at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) destined for Australia, Guinea Republic, and the US.
DCI acted on intelligence leads. The consignment was handed over to the government chemist for further analysis.
In June, DCI arrested two suspected of possessing cocaine worth Ksh120 million hidden inside the car. The officers laid a trap for the suspects headed to JKIA.
Officers also raided an apartment in Ngara where it was believed the suspects were operating. More narcotics were recovered at the scene before repackaging.
