A boda boda rider died, while several other road users were injured after four vehicles collided at the Murengeti area along the Nairobi Nakuru Highway on Wednesday, August 2.

According to emergency responders, the boda rider who collided with one of the cars was rushing to attend a funeral in Siaya County.

The accident was attributed to fog which impaired the motorists' vision.

Following the accident, other motorists using the route were urged to be cautious and avoid speeding to reduce the risks of causing another incident.

"Motorists approaching Ngarariga, Lari, Kimende, and Kinungi are advised to take caution following a series of road accidents that have occurred here this morning.

"Currently, there is limited visibility due to fog along that stretch of the road," read part of the traffic alert issued by St John's Ambulance.

Emergency personnel attended to the injured road users who were rushed to nearby hospitals for admission. The dead body was also ferried to a local morgue in the vicinity.

Later on, marshalls were deployed to cordone the accident scene and ease traffic which was slowly building up.

The accident occurred hours after four vehicles also collided along the Northern Bypass on Tuesday night, August 1.

In videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the collision involved a lorry and a red car which was severely damaged. According to eyewitnesses, one driver, who was intoxicated, was subsequently trapped inside the car.

Other vehicles plying the route were compelled to slow down to prevent the occurrence of a potential second crash.

Earlier in the day, two motorists were rushed to Kijabe Hospital for medical attention following a road accident involving four vehicles, too, in the Kinungi area along Nairobi Nakuru Highway.

To deal with the increased accident cases, the Ministry of Transport laid out several measures, including mandatory retesting of drivers and a crackdown on all spare parts dealers accused of selling substandard components.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicates that fatalities between January and June 2023 stood at 2,124 as of July 2023.

Pedestrians accounted for 330 deaths with boda riders following at 265.
