The Sagana State Lodge holds a prominent place in Kenya's political history, considering the significance of the traditions and activities hosted at the establishment.

President William Ruto, following in the footsteps of his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta, visited the lodge on Saturday, August 5, during his development tour of the Mount Kenya region.

Despite their political differences, Ruto has continued to uphold and preserve the key traditions at the lodge just like his predecessor did.

Official Reception
Upon arrival at the State Lodge at different times during their tenures, both Presidents were treated to a heartwarming welcoming tradition that includes a guard of honour at the gate.

As part of this escort, a group of officers line up near the gate. The President's car then makes a brief stop as a sign of respect for the uniformed officers.

Thereafter, the officers blow their trumpets to signify the president's entry. The tune used for the occasion varies based on the government in power, adding a unique touch to the ceremony.

The tradition was equally observed when Ruto arrived at the Lodge.

Digital Strategist Dennis Itumbi shared a video capturing the short but meaningful event, lasting less than a minute. During President Uhuru's three Sagana meetings, the same practice was observed, showcasing its significance.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua reiterated Ruto's welcome carried political significance, indicating that they intended to receive him as a respected figure, almost like a 'king'.

"Even though we elected you, we had not confirmed you as a leader in this region. The way it is done is that a leader must come from Nairobi through River Chania by road and not by plane. That journey must take eight hours - no more, no less.

"Yesterday you crossed River Chania at 10:38 pm and we received you at the gate at exactly 6:38 pm" he stated.

Open to Public

Sagana State Lodge is distinct among official State establishments, being more open to neighbouring residents during events.

President Uhuru hosted key Mt Kenya political meetings at the venue. For instance, in September 2021, Uhuru used the opportunity to drum support for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and the handshake with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Such is the significance of political meetings held at the lodge that Uhuru was accused of misusing the venue to undermine Ruto, who was his deputy at the time. The former Head of State often addressed Mt Kenya politicians and held interviews in his local dialect to connect with his Mt Kenya political base.

Ruto's team has now moved to rebrand the State Lodge. They organized a prayer meeting on Sunday, August 6, and extended a warm welcome to residents and offered them food to make them feel welcome.

"We want Ruto to transform this State Lodge to be a place of peace and development. This place was really misused to divide us and I could hear the hate speeches from my house because I live around here," he stated.

"When I said that we would eat rice and meat after winning they thought that I was joking."

History of the Lodge

Sagana State Lodge was handed over to the Kenyan government by the British government after the country attained independence in 1963. Previously the Lodge was used by Queen Elizabeth II during her visits to Kenya.

Reports indicate that the lodge was a gift to the queen following her marriage to the Duke of Edinburgh.
