A day after the National Police Service seized Ksh 13 Million stashed in a slum in Ngara, which was believed to be proceeds of drug trafficking, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), has showered praise on the police and the general public.

In a statement, NACADA boss John Muteti congratulated the police for retrieving the drugs and other narcotics substances during the Tuesday raid in Ngara, Nairobi County.

In his remarks, he noted that the police had greatly contributed to NACADA’s mandate of stemming drug and substance abuse.

“During the crackdown, about 30 bags of marijuana, 173 portions of blended bhang together with 42 cartons containing 200 cigarettes each were recovered,” the statement read.

Muteti did not shun away from lauding praise on members of the public, without whose tips, the police would not have seized the drugs.

The authority boss went ahead to request the public to work hand in hand with the police to ensure they win the battle against drug and substance abuse.

On Tuesday, August 15, police officers in Gigiri, Nairobi County announced that they had recovered Ksh 13 million stashed in sacks suspected to be proceeds of drug peddling.

The raid was staged at Kariwa Slums in Ngara, Nairobi County and went ahead to elicit public conversation around the matter.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) stated that the officers had also seized marijuana substances alongside the cash during the police operation and would proceed to carry out further investigations into the matter.

In July this year, NACADA's attention was also drawn to a viral video online that depicted a group of youth under the influence of a certain substance believed to be fentanyl.

In response to the incident, John Muteti said the agency had embarked on a fact-finding mission and was coordinating all responsible agencies with a view to getting to the bottom of the issue.

"The authority is currently engaging the leadership in county governments where the substance is alleged to be available so as to adopt a one government approach," Muteti noted then.

In August NACADA deployed authorities to the coastal region to assess the situation better and help seek rehabilitation for all those affected.
