A  passenger on a flight from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was arrested in Mumbai, India, in a Ksh1.2 billion shillings drug burst.

In a statement dated Tuesday, February 14, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) confirmed that the woman was nabbed with 12 kilogrammes of heroin.

The DRI acted on a tip-off from India's intelligence and checked her luggage, where they found the consignment.

"She arrived in Mumbai from Harare via Nairobi. We seized 11.94 kilogrammes of cream-coloured granules which tested positive for heroin upon examination," the release read in part.

Officers from the agency revealed that the substance was concealed in parts of her trolley bag and modified file folders.

Upon questioning, the suspect claimed she was handed over the luggage in Zimbabwe with express instructions to deliver it to individuals in India.

Consequently, the authorities arrested two men she positively identified as her accomplices. The three will be charged under the country's Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The act dictates that any individual found importing a commercial quantity of narcotic drugs is liable to a jail term of not less than 10 years and a fine of not less than Ksh152,000 (100,000 Indian Rupees).

Detectives probing the matter will also work with counterparts in Nairobi and Zimbabwe to arrest accomplices, including those who helped stash her luggage.

The incident came barely three months after a Kenyan woman was arrested at Chennai Airport in possession of a kilogramme of heroin.

Detectives accused the woman, who landed from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, of concealing the banned substance in her body.

She was detained, and the heroin was recovered before she was charged and arraigned as per Indian laws.
