Azimio leaders are set to convene to assess the remarks made by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua regarding a purported deal between President William Ruto and Raila Odinga locking out Wiper's Kalonzo Musyoka.

During an interview on Wednesday, Kitui Central Member of Parliament Makali Mulu expressed concerns over Gachagua's remarks, warning that such an agreement would be retrogressive in the opposition's plan to hold the government accountable.

The MP indicated that they would seek to establish whether intelligence reports supported Gachagua's statements or whether they were merely political rhetoric.

However, should there be a deal between Raila and Ruto, Kalonzo's allies from the lower eastern region would oppose the agreement and advocate for their own set of demands.

"The presidency has the benefit of getting intelligence from all the arms of government. He may be saying this from an informed position. If that is the position, then we do not have any business to be involved in those talks," he stated while appearing on Citizen TV

Mulu also criticised the DP's strategy to woo the region, even faulting him for revealing details of talks between Ruto and Raila, contrary to an agreement made by a bipartisan team selected to represent the two leaders.

The MP indicated that they would further demand an apology from Gachagua for reprimanding the Kamba community for supporting Azimio.

"We did not take it kindly, and you could see even the reaction of the people. He should have mourned with our colleague and then maybe pleaded to have us move to their side," Mulu condemned the DP.

"We pay taxes to this government, and we will be demanding to get a fair share of these taxes," the lawmaker added.

Gachagua, on Tuesday, claimed that  Raila was exerting influence over Kalonzo through the ongoing discussions, further alleging that the ODM leader was prioritising his personal gains within the agreement with Ruto.

The DP made controversial remarks at the funeral of the mother of Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka (Kawaya).

According to Gachagua, the alleged deal was brokered in Mombasa. However, he refrained from offering specific details of the agreement, the exact date and the power brokers.

"Raila looked for Ruto the other day, and he came without Kalonzo. He only spoke for himself, his kids and his people. He has now sent Kalonzo to the talks where the agenda does not address the issue of Ukambani," Gachagua claimed.

“Nothing will come out of those talks. It is a waste of time. I’m telling you as Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya."

Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka are yet to respond to Gachagua's allegations.

The latter was selected to lead Azimio's bipartisan talks in negotiating a deal with the government under the leadership of Kimani Ichung'wah, Kikuyu MP and the National Assembly majority leader.
