U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer, has arrived in Nairobi where he is expected to meet various stakeholders to discuss the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
During his visit, he is scheduled to hold meetings with Kenyan and Ethiopian officials, as well as engage with officials from the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and various international partners.
The primary focus of these discussions will be on regional and international collaborative efforts aimed at quelling the political instability in Sudan.
Following his engagements in Kenya, Hammer will proceed to Ethiopia where he will address the continued implementation of the Cessation and Hostilities Agreement.
"In Ethiopia, he will also discuss the continued implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement as well as urge the protection of civilians and a negotiated resolution to ongoing conflicts in the Amhara and Oromia regions," reads part of the statement shared by the US Department of State.
Hammer's visit to Ethiopia is scheduled from Monday, August 28 to September 8.
The political instability in Sudan has been condemned by the international community with the US calling for peace.
Since the political tension started, residents have lost their lives, some have been displaced while others especially women and children have been assaulted.
The crisis has disrupted economic activities and government operations. The conflict is primarily rooted in disagreements between two major factions: the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In June, President William Ruto expressed his keen interest in mediating the Sudanese conflict and contributing to the restoration of peace in the country.
"We will, in the next ten years, meet face to face with General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (RSF) and Abdel Fattah al-Burhan (SAF) so that we can speak to them directly on behalf of IGAD, with a view of stopping the war that is raging in Sudan," Ruto stated.
However, his engagement in the crisis encountered significant resistance after Junta leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan accused Ruto of harbouring vested interests.
