Citizen TV's Senior Political Affairs reporter Stephen Letoo is counting losses after burglars vandalised his vehicle and made away with valuables.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the journalist said that the incident occurred on Friday night minutes after he had parked his vehicle at a local petrol station along Muthangari Road in Lavington.
After completing his errands at the facility, he returned to his car and as he approached the vehicle, he noticed shattered glass on the passenger seat.
Upon further inspection of his vehicle, Letoo discovered that several valuable items were missing. These include; a laptop, hard drives, personal belongings, and VIP invitation cards for his upcoming thanksgiving ceremony.
The journalist questioned whether this incident was an isolated occurrence, wondering why his vehicle was targeted among the many cars in the parking lot.
"I am still doing an assessment to find out if there is anything else they took. There were many vehicles in the parking lot I believe this was not an isolated case since I am the only one who found my car in that state," he said.
Letoo confirmed that he reported the matter at Muthangari Police Station through OB number 04/02/09/2023.
Various journalists have recently found themselves targeted, with many falling victim to robberies or attacks in the line of work.
On March 27, 2023, African Uncensored's John Allan Namu, raised concerns after his fellow journalists faced assaults and arrests as they covered the mass demonstrations staged by the Azimio coalition.
On the same day, other journalists working for different media houses reporting on the same demonstrations encountered a rowdy gang in Kibra. Some of the journalists sustained injuries, while others were robbed.
These distressing incidents serve as alarming indicators of the escalating crime rates in the country. According to the 2023 Economic Survey conducted by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), theft cases surged from 11,762 in 2021 to 14,714 in 2022.
