A video of a motorist flouting traffic rules along Waiyaki Way in front of a police officer before causing an accident has seen Kenyans up in arms.

The motorist who was heading to the Central Business District (CBD) in a white Land Cruiser was filmed crossing over the pavements under the Nairobi Expressway over to the lanes heading back to Westlands.

In the process, the vehicle blocked other cars, forcing some to break instantly leading to an accident that involved a boda rider.

The driver then sped off, leaving other motorists to help the boda rider.

The boda rider who was wearing a helmet was unhurt during the accident, however, his motorbike and goods were damaged.

Meanwhile, a police officer who was around the area was captured on a phone call - only approaching the scene after the accident.

Kenyans were irked with the fact that the cop witnessed the driver atop the pavements for minutes before moving to the lanes leading out of the CBD.

Following the video, Kenyans have called for the arrest of the motorist who deliberately opted to illegally cross over to avoid a traffic jam that was building up.

Pressure is also piling on the National Police Service(NPS) to take administrative action against the officer for failing to act fast enough to avert the situation.

According to the Traffic Act, driving on pavement, or pedestrian walkways attracts a fine not exceeding Ksh30,000.

A person who contravenes subsection (1) commits an offence and shall be liable for a first conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months, or to a fine not exceeding Ksh30,000.

"For a second or subsequent conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months," reads the Act in part.
