The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Executive Committee (NEC) has fined Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris Ksh250,000 for going against the party's position on the Finance Act 2023.

The woman representative was among 28 members of the Orange Democratic Movement who defied the party and voted for the Bill on June 14, 2023.

In a statement delivered on Wednesday, NEC said that Passaris should issue a written apology within seven days and pay the fine within sixty days.

According to the committee, the resolution was arrived at a committee meeting chaired by Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

The committee noted that it was taking action against Members of Parliament who were associating with President William Ruto.

Five members were expelled including MPs Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang'o (Langata) and Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda.

Mark Ogolla Nyamita (Uriri) and Paul Abuor (Rongo), who were also accused of defying the party, were fined of Ksh1 million each within sixty days.

They were also ordered to offer a written apology to the party within seven days.

NEC said that they adopted the resolutions which were recommended by the disciplinary committee.

In June 2023, ODM revealed that it would punish its members who went against the party's wishes of opposing the Finance Act, which they termed as punitive taxes imposed on Kenyans.

The members Passaris, Elisha Ochieng Odhiambo(Gem MP), Aden Adow Mohamed (Wajir South MP) and Caroli Omondi (Suba South MP) among others.

The party also resolved to punish those absent during the debate including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, John Mbadi (nominated), Jalang'o, and Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda.
