India Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday responded to President William Ruto, listing several ways how Africa will benefit from its recent admission as a permanent member of the G20.
In a statement, President William Ruto welcomed the African Union (AU's) admission to the G20, saying that it will increase the continent's voice on the global stage.
President Ruto further said a seat at the table will help Africa get a platform to advance the common interests of her people.
Moments later, Modi responded to the statement saying that Ruto's vision was shared by all G20 countries.
“Indeed, the inclusion of the African Union in the G20 is a significant stride towards a more inclusive global dialogue,” Modi affirmed.
President Ruto further stated that the inclusion aligned with resolutions made by African Heads of State during the Africa Climate Summit concluded on Wednesday, September 6.
“This includes the reform of international financial institutions and multilateral development banks,” he remarked.
In agreement, Modi stated, “We look forward to collaborative efforts that benefit not only our respective continents but also the entire world.”
The AU led by Chairperson Azali Assoumani will take a permanent seat in the G20 to represent 55 member nations who make up the Union.
The Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum made up of 19 developed nations and the world's most advanced economies.
Comprising the world's wealthiest nations and economic blocs, the G20 primarily focuses on addressing global economic concerns.
Among these, international financial stability and climate change mitigation hold significant importance for President William Ruto, based on his remarks in April.
Ruto voiced his concerns about an unjust global lending system which he said negatively impacts African nations, a sentiment he reiterated during the Africa Climate Summit
“We are asking for a win-win financial architecture that brings everyone on board,” he remarked then.
