A gun-wielding man was captured by CCTV camera outside a local bank in Kisumu, where he robbed a family at night.

The victims, a man, a woman, and a young girl, were loading items into the trunk of a car when the suspect approached them at around 10:33 pm.

In the 54-second video, the suspect was captured reaching out for his gun, which was concealed and hidden inside his pocket.

He then coerced the victims to hand over their phones as the rider ransacked the car for other valuables. The duo then fled together on board a boda boda.

The family was left in shock, prompting the adults to comfort the young girl by embracing her while seated in the trunk.

According to the time stamp on the video, the incident occurred on Sunday, September 10, at night with few residents on the streets.

The locals condemned the incident and called upon the police to enhance security and prevent the prevalence of such scenarios.

"This is painful, something has to be done. Where are the security personnel when such a crime is happening?" one questioned.

They further urged the county government to ensure all the streets are well-lit to discourage gangs from ambushing locals.

Cases of insecurity across the country have been on the rise, with some attributed to the high cost of living, which has left many Kenyans struggling to put food on the table.

According to the Economic Survey published in May, the number of people reported to have committed crimes across the country increased by 4.4 per cent to 87.858 in 2022.

"The number of crimes committed by males increased by 2.3 per cent to 70,383 while crimes committed by females increased by 13.6 per cent to 17,745," read part of the report.

However, Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, in past press briefings, assured that enough police were deployed countrywide and in areas prone to insecurity to restore normalcy.
