Samburu residents are afraid for their lives after a police reservist in the area was robbed of his government-issued gun.
According to residents, the officer was attacked by unknown assailants at his home in Wamba town, Samburu, after returning from work.
Reports indicate that this is the second of such attacks in recent days.
“Thieves attacked the officer at night at around 9.30 to 10.00. He was beaten and his gun taken,” Nasieku Lekangu," a Wamba resident narrated.
Locals claim that the stolen weapon has been used in recent criminal activities in the area including the recent shooting of a man.
They claim that the man was shot four times and is currently recuperating at Maralal Hospital.
“That gun is missing and it is a threat to our lives," another resident stated.
Residents are now calling on the government to launch a probe into the matter and facilitate the recovery of the missing firearm.
The incident comes at a time when Samburu residents are grappling with insecurity issues as a result of bandit attacks.
The bandits often use unlicensed and illegal firearms which despite the government's amnesty initiative earlier this year, are still prevalent.
Just last week, armed bandits attacked the Morijo area in Samburu claiming the lives of five people.
Leaders in the area have since come together to try and foster reconciliation among the warring communities, an initiative aimed at ending bloodshed in the region.
