A number of officers attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) on Monday surrounded the office of Kisii Governor Simba Arati at Gusii Stadium.

Reports indicated that the Governor had been blocked from entering the stadium where he hosts a secondary office.

The officers were ferried to the premises in a police truck accompanied by other police vehicle but it is still unclear what they are after.

Sources claimed that the GSU surrounded the office after receiving orders from above.

Reports further indicated that the GSU battalion raided some of the offices associated with the Governor stationed at the county's biggest stadium.

In an earlier address, Arati had claimed that the battalion had stormed his premises at night seeking to carry out the raid but he preferred any investigations be done during the day.

In his speech on Sunday, the county boss had implored the national government not to deploy police officers to injure Kisii youth, most of whom rely on boda boda business for their daily bread.

He also claimed that political leaders of national parties had developed tendencies to destabilising the devolved units by dividing their youth.

"The National Government, we complement each other. We have two governments, the national and county governments. These tendencies of dividing our youth on political lines should stop. All these people are my people," he told the congregation.

"We have 95,000 motorcycle riders but I implore them to ensure peace. If you send the police to injure our youth, we will not agree."

In recent months, Arati has been at loggerheads with the ruling Kenya Kwanza following reports from some leaders in the ruling coalition that security for select governors would be withdrawn.

Whereas he vowed to work with the ruling government, he maintained that he would not support the Kenya Kwanza government.

“Someone whom we can not stand with is that person who hurls insults at us. We are Kenyans and not outsiders. The person who talks about shares tells us to behave so that we can get our security back," he stated at a rally in September.

Arati serves as the Deputy Chairperson of the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) National Executive Committee (NEC) since taking over the role on September 8, 2023.
