The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Saturday announced the arrest of a fraudster who has been posing as a National Intelligence Service (NIS) senior officer and swindling millions from graft suspects including high-ranking politicians.
In a statement, the agency disclosed that the imposter had a history of encounters with law enforcement and was under investigation by multiple agencies.
The fraudulent NIS officer falsely asserted his affiliation with the EACC, claiming involvement in cases implicating high-ranking officials.
He would approach these individuals, assuring them he could make their cases disappear implying his key role in the ongoing investigations.
The man is reported to have claimed to be well-connected to senior police officers calling the shots at various agencies.
To help out the suspects in question, the imposter would then demand millions as payment.
"The suspect dupes his victims, mostly high-ranking officials, into believing that he has top-notch connections with heads of key security and law enforcement agencies in the country and that by a single phone call, he can "cause many things to happen," read the statement in part.
"He has been contacting his victims claiming to be investigating very sensitive matters and has information that incriminates them. He then demands millions of money from the victims to assist them out of trouble."
Following complaints, the man was tracked down and arrested by EACC detectives at an entertainment joint along Thika Road.
The fake NIS officer will be charged in court upon completion of the investigations.
On the other hand, it was noted that similar incidents had been on the rise with Kenyans advised to be cautious of the same.
Those who face similar incidents were urged to report the cases through the toll-free line: 551 or through the agency's email: report@integrity.go.ke.
