A Kenyan national based in India is counting his losses after he was robbed of Ksh222,660 by three Indians impersonating police officers.

According to international reports, the trio allegedly forced the Kenyan to go through an impromptu search and managed to walk away with the cash from his bag.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening, January 8, in Gurugram, India when the victim was returning home with his brother.

According to the victim, he had come to India with his brother for treatment on January 1, 2023, and was residing at the Queen Residency guest house in Sector 52.

"On Sunday evening, my brother and I had gone to the market to shop. On our way back on the service road near our guest house, three people in a white car accosted us.

"They told us that they were from the police department and wanted to search our passport and luggage," the victim recounted.

According to the victim's account, documented in a police report, he handed over his bag to the trio who ransacked it before fleeing.

"When we checked the pocket of my bag we found that 1,800 dollars (an equivalent of Ksh222,660) were missing from it," the Kenyan indicated in his statement to the police.

On the basis of the victim's complaint, a first information report was registered against three unknown persons under sections 379 (theft), 419 (cheating by impersonation), and 420 (cheating) of the IPC at Sector 53 Police Station.

Police officers in Gurugram launched a manhunt for the three imposters in a bid to bring them to justice.

"We are exploring the CCTV footage of the area and are trying to nab the accused," stated ASI Jitender Kumar, the Investigating Officer.

Cases of Kenyans being duped or robbed in India have been on the rise in the recent past.

In November 2022, two Kenyan women in India were overcome with joy after police recovered and returned the Ksh2.2 million they had lost after a taxi they had boarded sped off with the cash.
