The Environment Ministry on Tuesday announced plans to monitor Kenyans planting trees during the National Tree Planting Day set for November 13, using a mobile application.
Speaking on Tuesday, Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya stated that the government is set to launch a public mobile application that will track and monitor tree planting activities on the day.
“The application is a mobile application, that the ministry has developed to monitor and track the tree-growing activity,” stated Tuya.
Tuya stated that every Kenyan is expected to document their tree planting activities by taking a picture and uploading it on the app.
The app will also allow users to update and track the growth of the tree by sharing progress images.
According to Tuya, the government is expecting over 50 Kenyans to plant at least two trees on the day.
The country is targeting at least 100 million trees as the rain season is projected to extend to January 2024.
The government has identified a wetland in Makueni where the president will preside over the national event.
At the same time, the event will be officiated in different counties concurrently, with each cabinet secretary presiding over at least two counties, according to directives by Tuya.
This application comes after President Ruto instructed the ministry to develop a tree-planting app.
"I will shortly be launching the JazaMiti application, one that every Kenyan or institution will use to document their tree planting. The app will help to monitor, over time, the growth of trees," President Ruto stated on December 21, 2022.
Since then, the Jaza Miti app has been in development for eleven months.
