Hundreds of commuters destined for Nairobi city were on Tuesday morning dealt a blow after Kenya Railways announced a temporary disruption of its services.
The corporation, on its X page, warned of disruption of train services from Lukenya and Syokimau branches to Nairobi Central Station.
According to Kenya Railways, the interference in the train schedule was a result of a blockage on the line caused by a derailment at Imara Daima.
"This morning the train to Nairobi Central Station from Lukenya and Syokimau stations will not run," read part of Kenya Railways statement.
Kenya Railways further noted that it was working to restore the operations of the affected services.
"Passengers are advised to bear with us and use alternative means. We apologise for the inconvenience caused," the corporation noted.
"Our technical team is working to restore the derailed train."
In Lukenya, two trains were scheduled to depart for Nairobi Central Station, one at 5.45 am and the second at 7.00 am. The trains were to drop off passengers at CBD at 7.40 am and 8.55 am, respectively.
Meanwhile, In Syokimau, four trains were scheduled to depart in the morning from 6:20 am and the last at 10:40 am.
However, commuter train services on the other routes within Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) were undisrupted.
In July this year, a similar incident occurred when Kenya Railways announced the temporary closure of its services due to planned anti-government protests by the Azimio La Umoja coalition.
In their announcement, passengers who sought to use the Nairobi Commuter train service between Nairobi Central Station and Lukenya, Syokimau, Embakasi Village, Ruiru, Kahawa West, and Limuru were advised to use other means of transport.
