Fafi MP Salah Yakub, who is allied to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), is demanding action from the Interior Ministry following a beating he endured at Nyayo House.

In a statement on Monday night, the lawmaker claimed that the assault left him nursing injuries on his leg and arm.

He revealed that he had visited the storied house in pursuit of a passport when the officers, a policewoman in particular, attempted to extort him before the alleged assault took place.

He further noted that the police officers assigned to the building located in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD), had repeatedly assaulted citizens seeking services at the storied building.

"CS Kithure Kindiki and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, (it is) very unfortunate that police officers at Nyayo house are mishandling the general public and today I fell a victim, roughed up and seriously assaulted. I sustained injuries to my left foot and arm," he lamented.

He further alleged that six MPs, him included, have so far fallen victim to the police officers who he claimed routinely extorted the public.

"There is a policewoman heading the security there. She collects money from Kenya Somalis who applied for passports in order for them to access the premises and she verily mishandled most NEP MPs (MPs from the North Eastern Province of Kenya). I am the sixth MP to be humiliated by that contingent. Waziri (CS) take action!" He added.

The assault comes months after the Interior CS launched a clean-up of the perpetually corrupted tower intending to hasten the production of passports.

Between August and September this year, the CS made impromptu visits at the National Immigration Department headquarters at Nyayo House to assess the situation and interact with Kenyans seeking services.

After his interaction with the clients, the CS acknowledged the existence of bottlenecks in the process which he noted were obstacles to efficiency in the delivery of vital services.

Several individuals accused of scuttling service delivery were arrested in the investigations that ensued thereafter.

The CS's visit to the immigration department was informed by complaints from a section of Kenyans over delays in the process of acquiring passports in the recent past.
