Police officers attached to Fort Tenan Police Station in Kericho have revealed the cause of the morning accident in Londiani involving a 66-seater bus that saw over 40 people nurse crucial injuries.
According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the incident occurred at 3:00 am at a time when the driver of the Isuzu Bus was rushing to Busia from Nairobi.
Upon reaching Londiani in Kericho, the private vehicle that the bus was trailing stopped suddenly, forcing the driver to swerve to avoid a collision.
The bus driver thus veered to the left side of the road, causing the passengers to be tossed around.
As a result of the impact, over 40 passengers were injured and rushed to Forternan Sub-County Hospital for medical treatment.
The split-second decision by the driver to swerve instead of halting at top speed saved the lives of the passengers, as no fatality was recorded.
He also prevented a trail of destruction as other vehicles were speeding closely behind.
"Police officers attached to Fort Tenan Police Station visited the scene," read part of the report, adding that they cordoned off and assessed the area.
The incident was reported by the Kenya Red Cross, which noted that the 40 casualties were rescued by the County ambulance and well-wishers.
Following the incident, the agency provided psychological support to those affected.
Londiani has been labelled as a blackspot with the occurrence of numerous accidents. In July, close to 52 people lost their lives at the same spot six months ago.
Thereafter, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen ordered the erection of speed bumps, promising Kenyans that his ministry would prevent another tragedy from occurring at the blackspot.
According to NTSA, 3,760 Kenyans lost their lives through road accidents as of October 2023.
