A family in Kericho County is in mourning after their kin was killed in a hit-and-run accident along the Kaplong-Kapkatet road.

According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, General Service Unit (GSU) officer Wesley Ng'eno had travelled to his rural areas to spend time with his family for the Christmas holidays.

On Thursday evening, the officer left home and headed towards Kapkatet market before he was knocked by a motor vehicle near Kapkatet Tea factory at the junction of Chebilat Mixed Secondary School.

The report indicated that the motor vehicle failed to stop after the accident and sped off from the scene. The officer's brother noticed that he had gone for hours without a response and went to check on him at the market.

However, he found him lying on the side of the road in an unconscious state. The brother rushed him to Kapkatet Sub-County Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

"The body is preserved in the same facility awaiting autopsy," read part of the report.

Officers attached to Litein Police Station visited the scene and documented it. Further, the officers embarked on the search for the unknown motor vehicle.

The incident highlights the dire situation on Kenyan roads as the country has experienced a spike in the number of accidents especially during the holidays.

Barely 24 hours ago, six people died while 15 others were injured in a road accident along the Nyeri-Nyahururu highway.

Further, four people, including two schoolgirls, were run over by a lorry that was heading to Busia town on Tuesday morning.

To curb the crisis, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) launched a road safety campaign titled #UsalamaBarabarani which urges motorists to adhere to all traffic laws during the festive season.
