The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) on Friday condemned the attack on GSU police officers at Banane Area, Liboi Sub County in Garissa County.

IPOA, terming the act as inhumane, called upon the Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome to speed up investigations and apprehend criminals involved in the attack.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday targeted GSU police officers who were on duty after a suspected IED hit the vehicle they were travelling in.

A statement issued by IPOA on the incident read, “As the Authority empathizes with the officers who were injured in the attack and wishes them the full restoration of health, it also hopes that the Inspector General of Police and the police leadership will decisively deal with the criminal act committed at Banane".

IPOA further committed to working with the entire police service in efforts to eradicate brutality against the officers.

“IPOA in the strongest terms possible condemns the inhuman and heinous attack meted upon Police Officers who were diligently carrying out their duties,” the statement reads.

Following similar occurrences reported in the past, the authority advised officers to implement recommendations provided over time by the National Police Service Act.

“Such criminal acts call for firm but lawful management by the police to ensure restoration of order sustainable peace countrywide,” the notice further states.

IPOA has also cautioned against attacks on police officers on duty, equating it to challenging the country’s sovereignty.

According to a statement recorded at their camp, the GSU cops were on their way to pick up off-duty officers when the attack happened.

“The officers managed to escape unhurt save for one whose hearing had been affected by the explosion,” a statement issued by the police read.
