Nairobi County Government has advised parents to be watchful of their children owing to incidents observed during Friday's downpour that led to the flooding of the CBD and some estates.
In a statement issued by the County's Disaster Management and Coordination Team led by Bramwel Simiyu, it was noted that a child was swept away by floods in Kibera on Friday evening.
Parents were, therefore, called on to keep close tabs on the children during the rains.
On the other hand, motorists were also cautioned against driving through stagnant water given that some roads were flooded during the Friday rains.
"A team will be conducting an assessment today to ascertain the extent of the damages and to confirm the number of households affected and any other additional needs other than the ones identified last night, as well as conduct sensitization sessions for enhanced safety in the communities.
"We continue to emphasize that people should not attempt to cross the rivers once the banks break, avoid walking in moving flood waters, and for adults to keep a watchful eye on children to not play next to the rivers," Simiyu stated.
On the other hand, it was noted that the county government had set up a psychological team that would be able to help those who have been affected by the floods.
The disaster management team is also assessing the extent of damages occasioned by the rains and floods.
Meanwhile, Simuyu added that work was in progress to ensure that the flooding and drainage do not occur again.
Sections of the CBD and city estates were left flooded after it rained for hours on Friday afternoon. The floods were blamed on poor drainage systems in the city.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has also asked Kenyans in Nairobi and parts of the country to prepare for rain for the better part of the coming week.
"From January 6th to 12th, 2024 expect continued rainfall in the southern half of the country, while North-eastern and North-western Kenya stay generally dry. Isolated storms may occur over the South Rift Valley and South-eastern lowlands. Stay weather-aware!" Kenya Met advised.
