South Mugirango MP and National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro is in the spotlight after chaos erupted at an event in his constituency.

In a clip shared on social media, his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) counterpart, Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, accused the whip of sending goons to disrupt Kisii Governor Simba Arati from issuing bursaries.

While the Governor was addressing the gathering on Monday, gunshots rented the air, forcing attendees to scamper for safety. Arati's aide acted swiftly and covered him under a piece of clothing before whisking him out of the scene.

The clash lasted for about 30 minutes before calm was restored.

"Today in South Mugirango, what was that about? Simba Arati is a Governor of every other resident in Kisii. If he goes to South Mugirango to give bursaries, do you mean the children in South Mugirango should not get bursaries because it will show they support the Governor politically [sic]?" Wondered Orwoba.

"Osoro you are my friend and you know I support you well but you have failed today. The Governor is doing his job. The least you could have demanded is a chance to speak as the area MP. I have seen there were injuries from the chaos [sic]."

The number of people who sustained injuries at the event remains unclear.

Arati, who spoke to the press shortly after the mayhem, blamed Osoro for the fracas, claiming that one of the shots targeted him.

"At that juncture, there were gunshots all over. I am told that a number of those shots, including a guy who has been hit on his left ear, were aimed at me. I want to understand, are we in a law-abiding country where the law must be followed?" He wondered.

The majority whip, however, distanced himself from the incident, calling on all politicians to enhance political tolerance.

"It is an unfortunate scene. We need to be politically tolerant and understand that campaigns are still far," Osoro claimed innocence.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.
