Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen is on the spot after 4 fatal road accidents were reported along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway in one week.

On Tuesday morning, an accident at the Twin Bridge area along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway left 15 people dead and several others injured, raising concerns about road safety on the major highway.

Various political leaders and Kenyans across the board have asked the relevant authorities to take action, stressing the need to protect lives.

The 4 accidents, which have in total claimed 28 lives, span from New Year’s Eve to January 9, 2024.

The National Police Service (NPS), was yet to give more details on the cause of Tuesday's accident by the time of publishing this article. It, however, noted that several others were seriously injured, and were rushed to Molo Sub County Hospital where they received treatment.

The sorrowful morning sparked an uproar among Kenyans, who want the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Ministry of Roads to take immediate action to curb the incidents, with some suggesting a ban on night travel.

“I would also like to ask NTSA, KeNHA and other state agencies to find a way of curbing the rampant accidents on this killer route so that we don’t lose people,” Johnson Muthama stated.

“Is it possible to ban night travel for Nissan and only allow registered buses to move at night?” a concerned citizen remarked.

On January 6, another accident involving 3 vehicles and a trailer which occurred in the Mustard area on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway left 1 dead and several others injured.

The incident came two days after a bus collided with 3 other vehicles in the Mlango Tatu area along the same road, killing 5 people and leaving others injured.

The New Year started on a sad note for several families, after 7 people travelling the previous evening lost their lives when a trailer that had allegedly lost brake control rammed into a 14-seater matatu they were travelling in.

The National Police Service (NPS) has continuously urged motorists using the road to take extra precautions to avoid any further accidents.
