A residence located along Kangundo Road popularly known as Mama Uhuru House belonging to the late freedom fighter Mwanaisha Bilali was demolished early Wednesday morning by Nairobi County officials.
Speaking to journalists, one of the freedom fighter's granddaughters narrated that about 100 officials from the Nairobi County Government arrived at the premises with bulldozers at night and began bringing down the home which holds sentimental value to her family.
In her narration, the granddaughter explained that efforts to engage the officials in a conversation and inquire about the reason for their visit proved futile.
The men went ahead to demolish the house leaving the residents stranded. The family members revealed that no notice was issued before the demolitions.
"They did not give us a chance to salvage our belongings from the building," she lamented.
While fighting back tears, the lady explained that she was left stranded as her money was in the house. She revealed that none of the officials she reached out to offered help.
Following the demolitions, young men from the area rushed to the scene and took whatever was spared and in good condition. The residents watched as their items were stolen and destroyed within hours.
"I work as a cleaner at the county offices, and I do not think I will go back again if the people you serve destroy our home. I know all of them, is this the Kenya we live in?" she posed.
She further remarked that the demolitions were biased as a bar in the vicinity was not demolished.
During a past interview, Bilali's grandchildren revealed that she was gifted four parcels of land by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2002. The family has been in fear of demolitions adding that only one parcel of land is remaining.
The family complained of being evicted from the home earlier despite having the documents presented to Bilali by Uhuru.
At the same time, the family expressed their rage at the turn of events considering that they have been paying land rates to the county government without fail.
"We have been City Hall but no one has helped us, they take a look at the papers and send us away," one of the relatives stated.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate that the demolitions were initiated to pave the way for the construction of a modern market in Kariobangi.
