Landlords who manage buildings within the city have been advised to take advantage of a waiver on all land rate penalties issued by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
In a statement, the county boss issued a waiver on all interest and penalties for one month.
He explained that the directive was aimed at giving Nairobi land owners and building managers a chance to clear their outstanding principal rates.
"His Excellency the Governor of Nairobi City County Sakaja Johnson hereby announces 100 per cent waiver on interest and penalties on land rates arrears effective December 1 to December 31, 2023," a statement by the county stated.
"The county operates a no cash policy in revenue collection. Upon obtaining their invoices, customers are advised to make their payments."
He further announced that to track records, the payments should be made through the county's bank accounts or via the USSD code *647#.
Landlords with outstanding arrears were also advised to clear their debts to avoid prosecution and save their property from auction.
In January 2023, Nairobi County doubled land rates payable on all residential and commercial buildings as well as agricultural plots.
Those in possession of land below 0.1 hectares part with Ksh2,560, while those with between 0.1 hectares and 0.2 hectares pay Ksh3,200 every year.
Individuals or entities with land sized between O.2 hectares and 0.4 hectares pay Ksh4,000, while those with land over 0.4 hectares pay Ksh4,800.
The directive was aimed at improving revenue collection within the city.
Until the increase, landowners paid 25 per cent of unimproved site value, which was passed in 1980.
