Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Wednesday offered full four year High School scholarship to Kimberly Nkatha, a student who scored 408 Marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) but had no hopes of joining High School.

“Kimberly Nkatha is smart, confident and has a bright future. She wants to be an accountant. However, as of yesterday, she had no hopes of joining Form one despite scoring 408 Marks due to her mother’s unemployed status,” the governor stated in a post.

According to the Governor, he will offer full fees as well as shopping needs for Kimberly for the four years to facilitate her education.

Kimberly had asked for help from well wishers by hoisting a placard, which indicated that she was from a humble background and her family did not have the means to pay for her education. It also showed the marks she scored.

“I come from a single-mother family. My mother is jobless with no source of income to cater for my school fees and requirements,” the information on the placard had read.

Kimberly was hosted at the Office of the Governor in Nairobi where Sakaja made the announcement.

The Governor reiterated his joy at having met the girl on time to help her considering that schools have already or are being opened countrywide.

He also stated that he had offered a job opportunity to Kimberly's mother.

“ I’m glad to have met her this morning, covered her full secondary school fees and shopping (Form 1-4) and offered her mother a job. Go forth and be great Kimberly!” He stated.

According to Sakaja, there are other students who would benefit from the governor’s scholarship at the end of the week.

“Kimberly will be part of the 1,000 bright but needy students joining form one who will benefit from this year’s Governor’s scholarship at the end of the week. This covers their full Form 1-4 education,” the Governor added.

As schools reopen, stories of students being unable to report back to school or parents being unable to afford their children joining high-school have featured in the news consistently of late as Kenyans grapple with the high cost of living.

On Tuesday, Members of  Parliament from Azimio and Kenya Kwanza Coalitions united in a presser calling for the ouster of the Treasury Cabinet Secretary over the delay in disbursing CDF funds.
