President William Ruto on Monday announced that the government has increased capitation for bursaries a few days after disbursing Ksh31 billion.

Speaking in Uasin Gishu County, the president announced that the government will release Ksh12 billion for schools countrywide.

According to Ruto, the added funds will guarantee the transition of students into Junior Secondary Schools and improve the education system.

"We want to make sure that our education system is appropriately grounded on a strong foundation upon which to build the process of Kenya," he stated.

President Ruto's announcement comes after opposition leader Raila Odinga issued demands to him to disburse the funds ahead of school reopening.

Ruto was also under pressure from other members of the opposition who urged him to prioritise the education sector before embarking on other development projects.

"Our students are facing financial challenges, and bursaries play a crucial role in ensuring that they have access to quality education. We urge President William Ruto to intervene and expedite the release of NG-CDF funds so that we can allocate bursaries without further delay," requested Trans Nzoia MP Kakai Bisau.

Raila had accused Ruto of failing to increase the capitation for schools compared to his predecessors. He called upon members of parliament to push for the disbursement of the funds and improvement of the education sector.

Meanwhile, during the event Ruto promised to revamp his old primary school Kamagut in Uasin Gishu. The project is estimated to cost Ksh190 million with contributions from other sponsors.

In the revamp, Ruto revealed that it will involve state-of-the-art classes and other facilities to benefit the students.

Other plans to improve the education sector by the government include hiring more teachers as well as promoting others.

Additionally, Ruto vowed to guarantee the economic transformation he promised Kenyans during the campaigns in 2022. He urged MPs to back his manifesto to benefit ordinary unemployed Kenyans living in substandard houses and lacking proper health care.

"I want to ask you, let us give the ordinary Kenyan a chance. I will do whatever it takes to make sure those without jobs are employed and those without health insurance get it," he stated.
