Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has expressed that the recent diplomatic misunderstanding between Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo will be sorted out in due course.

Speaking during a Citizen TV interview on Thursday, Mwaura maintained that Kenya still shares good diplomatic relations with DRC despite the misunderstanding which was witnessed in December 2023.

Mwaura was addressing DRC's displeasure towards Kenya over the controversial press conference conducted by its opposition politician Corneille Nangaa in Nairobi.

At the December conference, the opposition group announced that it would align with M23 rebels, who have been fighting President Felix Tshisekedi's administration.

To prove Kenya's unity with DRC, Mwaura hinted that President William Ruto was likely to attend Tshisekedi's inauguration following his recent election victory.

Further, he underlined that it was important for Kenya to maintain close diplomatic ties with DRC owing to the investment opportunities in the country with over 90 million people.

It was also important to safeguard the investments made by Kenyan companies in DRC, especially banks, according to the former senator.

"There are no differences and we even congratulated him (Tshisekedi) when he was elected for a second term. President William Ruto is even likely to attend the inauguration.

"When the group came to Kenya, we condemned their comments of wanting to lead the rebels who are opposed to the government. We are members of EAC and we cannot interfere with internal issues of another country," he stated.

Mwaura made the remarks amid a frosty relationship between Ruto and Tshisekedi. After the conference by the DRC opposition leaders, Tshisekedi's administration recalled its ambassador to Kenya.

Kenya on the other hand, distanced itself from the remarks of the DRC opposition leaders maintaining that they were committed to the country's peace.

“Kenya strongly disassociates itself from any utterances or activities likely to injure the peace and security of the friendly Nation of DRC and has commenced investigation to determine the identities of the makers of the statement and the extent to which their utterances fall outside constitutionally protected speech,” Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi stated then.
