A police officer attached to Moyale Police Station was killed on Friday in an accident involving a school bus at Kibabii in Bungoma County.

According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the accident happened after a school bus rammed into a donkey handcart ridden by a 20-year-old along the Kibabii area along Chwele-Kanduyi Road during rush hour.

The police report indicated that the 71-year-old school bus driver attempted to stop the vehicle but his efforts failed leading to the accident.

During the accident, the driver lost control and veered off to the opposite side, ramming into two motorcycles.

The victims included a Police Constable on patrol and a 24-year-old, in a separate motorcycle who survived the collision.

Passersby rushed to the scene to rescue the victims. Moments later, police officers from Bungoma Police Station arrived at the scene and assisted in clearing the traffic.

The three victims, including the officer, the 24-year-old, and the donkey cart rider, were rushed to Bungoma County Referral Hospital for medical attention.

The school bus is currently being detained at a police station as law enforcement officers investigate the cause of the accident.

"Two were admitted in stable condition but the police officer succumbed while being attended," read part of the police report.

"The body of the deceased is lying at the same hospital's morgue awaiting post-mortem. The motor vehicle and the motorcycles are detained at the station yard awaiting inspection."

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has in the recent past been urging motorists to adhere to traffic rules to reduce the number of road accidents.

According to NTSA's latest data, 84 fatalities have been recorded since the beginning of January 2024, representing an increase of 72 compared to the corresponding period the previous year.

From the data, pedestrians were the lead casualties with 31 deaths, followed by motorcyclists (23) and drivers (7).
