The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has transferred six teachers from St. Martin Mafuta School in Soy, Uasin Gishu County over concerns from education sector players that they were being targeted and their presence at the institution was a danger to their well-being.
This comes after parents chased away the principal and teachers over the poor results the school recorded in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KSCE) examinations, throwing learning at the institution into crisis.
A parent who opened up to the media during the time of the strike claimed that the institution recorded a mean grade of E with the top student scoring a D+.
The episode resulted in the school being shut down. The TSC has now been forced into action, transferring the teachers, in an attempt to placate the angry parents, guarantee the safety of the teachers, and allow learning to resume.
However, despite the resumption of learning, the institution is operating in dire straits as it does not have enough teachers to run the school.
The net effect of this is more pain on parents, who will be required to pay more to allow the school to hire private teachers following the transfer of the government tutors.
This comes after TSC, on Thursday, January 18 transferred 17 teachers from St. Gabriel Isongo in Kakamega County after parents, also stormed the school and frogmarched the principal over poor results recorded in KCSE.
This was done to secure the well-being of the teachers as more unions placed pressure on the commission to put in place guarantees to ensure teachers are well protected.
Instructively, this comes after Education CS Ezekiel Machogu on January 19 issued a warning to parents storming schools over poor results, warning that such acts would be dealt with accordingly.
"While the invasion of teachers and attacks on schools is unfortunate, and we cannot be able to allow that to continue, we have to adopt careful and consolidation means of ensuring we do not deprive young innocent children the right of education,"
He condemned the behavior clarifying that poor results should not be the sole responsibility of the teachers.
A total of 48,174 out of 899,453 candidates scored a mean grade of E in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
