The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has finally transferred teachers from St. Gabriel Isongo School in Kakamega following days of sustained pressure.

TSC transferred a total of 17 tutors on Thursday, one day after parents and students stormed the school and frogmarched its principal.

The parents were unimpressed by the poor performance the school posted in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Moments after, major teachers' unions began pressuring TSC to transfer or assure the teachers of their security terming the incident an affront to their wellbeing.

KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu led the demands arguing that teachers at the institution and two others were likely to face attacks.

"This must stop. Some head teachers and principals have been threatened. It is shameful," lamented Oyuu.

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) National Chairperson Omboko Milemba had also demanded action against the perpetrators and reinforced security for teachers countrywide.

So dire was the situation that KUPPET wanted action taken in a span of less than 24 hours noting that other affected schools were St Teresa's Bumini and Kabondi Primary School.

He also lamented that teachers at Isongo High School were overworked serving a student population exceeding 850 heads.

A day later, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu issued a warning to communities that have been staging attacks against teachers.

He remarked that it was wrong for parents and students to target school administrators since they are just a cog in the education wheel and cannot be held solely responsible for pupil and student performance.

"We wish to remind communities behind these regrettable attacks that learner achievement in examinations is the reflection of the overall input from all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and candidates themselves," he stated.

The CS further noted that TSC measures teachers' performances in a variety of ways beyond national examinations.
