“This is a historic moment and an important win for Kenya as it put us in a position of decision-making in matters that affect tourism across the globe. This vote demonstrates the confidence that UNWTO member states have in Kenya’s leadership and ability to steer the organization’s agenda on tourism competitiveness.

"We shall champion initiatives that will help in the creation of jobs, protecting of the planet as well as driving inclusive growth that can be felt and be impactful within communities,” he stated.

On his part, UNWTO Executive Director Zoritsa Urosevic credited Kenya's win to its vast experience in Tourism given that it is a leading destination for visitors across the globe.

Urosevic underpinned that Kenya would, therefore, help the organisation, with in-depth strategies for improving tourism which is a revenue generator for most countries.

“I commend Kenya for its commitment to sustainable tourism development. As one of the important tourism economies in Africa, Kenya will bring valuable experience and expertise that will lead the Committee’s work in enhancing competitiveness and responsible tourism across UNWTO member countries,” she stated.

Kenya had relied on its tourism destinations and infrastructure to woo the countries to support its bid.

Kenya's tourism sector has been recovering after the pandemic, with the sector being among the leading revenue generators for the country in 2023.

Various economic organisations have projected further revival of the sector owing to the expected increase in tourism activities and the implementation of the visa-free entry programme.
