Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has hit out at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his laxity in defending the interests of the Mt Kenya community, adding that he was yet to demonstrate that he can succeed former President Uhuru Kenyatta as the kingpin.

Speaking during an interview on KTN News on Thursday, Wamuchomba lamented that the top leadership of the Mt Kenya community had failed to prevent mass firings of government officials from the vote-rich region.

She noted that since September 2022, over 100 senior leaders from the region have been shown the door in a witchhunt that is detrimental to the efforts made by Uhuru in placing them in strategic government positions.

Wamuchomba credited Uhuru for his strategy noting that some of the officials had ascended to senior leadership offices in government and the military.

"As we speak, instead of the people who we have sent to the Kenya Kwanza government absorbing more of our people, they are firing them. How can you tell us that you are our kingpin, an imaginary kingpin, yet our people are being fired?

"I am one of those people who believed in the leadership of the people that are there. I campaigned for them and fought for them," she stated.

According to Wamuchomba, such inaction demonstrated that leaders positioning themselves as Uhuru's successors were yet to demonstrate their capability to step into his shoes.

The vocal UDA MP who has opposed various government programmes since President William Ruto's inauguration added that most senior leaders in the region were focused on bringing down those who critic the government.

"Uhuru became the kingpin the day he sacrificed himself, his family and everything he had for us. The hullabaloo of who is the kingpin or queenpin is not political.

"You can never become a kingpin because of your politics. You can only become one through your dedicated service to them. Who is that person who can demonstrate to us that they have gone a kilometre for our community? I haven't seen anybody." she reiterated.

Further, she cautioned that unknown individuals were using the 2027 running mate debate to cause friction in the community traditionally viewed as one of the biggest voting blocks.

This was in response to the push by a section of UDA MPs to have Gachagua replaced by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as the Kenya Kwanza running mate in 2027.
