11 Die After Accident Involving Super Metro Bus & Lorry on Kisumu- Nairobi Highway

Eleven people are feared dead after a Super Metro bus from Kampala was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry in Ahero on the Kisumu- Nairobi Highway.

The dead include two women, 8 men and a teenage boy. A total of 53 passengers suffered injuries as a result of the accident, Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Mwangi confirmed.

Additionally, it is reported that two drivers and a conductor who are affiliated with the bus Sacco are feared dead as a result of the grisly accident.

Reports about the incident, indicate that the bus rammed into a lorry ferrying sugar along the Ahero-Awasi road at a centre called Othoo while trying to overtake.

Further, it is reported that the accident occurred on Monday, January 29, morning at around 2:30 am. 

The Kenya Red Cross who responded to the emergency reported that multiple injured individuals have been taken to Ahero Sub-county Hospital while critical cases were transferred to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Additionally, the Kenya Red Cross has added that they are actively involved in providing psychosocial support and managing a tracing desk for individuals involved in the accident.

The sub-county commander based in Nyando Grace Thuo has also confirmed the incident. .

Additionally while confirming the case, Super Metro Sacco offered their condolences to the family members of the casualties.

“As Super Metro family would like to inform the public that it's so unfortunate that one of our buses plying the Kampala-Nairobi route was involved in an accident before Awasi along Kisumu- Nairobi Highway”.

“We would wish to convey a message of condolence to the families that lost their beloved ones and quick recovery to those who are in the hospital”, Super metro added.

The accident comes shortly after the bus was issued with long-distance travel permits to allow the Sacco to ply outside Nairobi.
