The owner of the illegal Embakasi gas plant that exploded on Thursday, last week surrendered to the police on Monday evening.

It was previously reported that the owner was at large and had failed to present himself to the police for questioning.

However, the gas plant owner, in the company of his lawyer presented himself at the Embakasi Police Station even as Kenyans seek answers over why the plant was allowed to operate in the first place despite not having a licence.

On Saturday, the owner, through his attorney had refuted claims that he was liable for the tragedy insisting that he did not run a gas plant as widely reported but a garage instead.

Nairobi Police Boss, Adamson Bungei stated that the gas plant owner was questioned on Monday evening with the authorities set to brief the country more on the matter at a later time.

“He is still talking to the team handling the matter. We will know more,” Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei confirmed.

According to previous reports, the owner had stated that he was not aware of any gas refilling activities in the area noting that the license to run the plant had earlier been denied by the Energy and Petroleum Regulation Authority (EPRA).

The owner had also claimed that the motor vehicle which had caused the explosion trespassed on his land without his knowledge.

Speaking through his lawyer he had stated, “He is actively pursuing the details of that vehicle so that it can be exposed to the police."

However, it is yet to be determined the involvement of the owner in the case that has since caused the deaths of six people.

Further, as a result of the explosion, there have been multiple National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) officials who have been suspended regarding the issuance of licenses for the license to operate.

In another directive, President William Ruto also directed the arrest of all those involved in granting licenses for the plant to operate in a residential area.
