A man suspected of defilement has hung himself using a sisal rope in a police cell at the Kapsarur police post in Nandi county.

The 22-year-old suspect was booked on February 14, 10.50 am, only for the officers to report at 11.20 am that the suspect was dead.

According to Kapsarur OCPD, the suspect took his life while being prepared for a court arraignment.

Residents stormed into the station threatening to burn it down as they questioned how the suspect committed suicide under police watch.

They obstructed the scene where the body was being processed and prevented the police van from transporting the body to the Samaritan Farewell Mortuary for storage.

"We want to know where he got the rope from because it is the responsibility of police officers to run a search and hold every suspect's possessions before being locked in a cell," one of the residents stated.

For close to two hours the residents incited disorder at the institutions while the officers attempted to restore calm.

The officials committed to saying that the suspect took his life after being locked in the cell but they could not explain how he got a hold of the sisal rope.

Reports privy to the incident indicated that the suspect was arrested after allegedly defiling a 17-year-old girl who had been reported missing.

Local authorities promptly issued a search warrant. Upon the missing girl's reappearance, she disclosed that she had been held captive and subjected to assault by the suspect throughout her disappearance.

"The missing girl resurfaced and confessed to have been at the house of Elvis Dede where she was defiled," read part of the police report

Following the allegations, the suspect had evaded capture until yesterday when he was apprehended, only to take his life while in custody.
