The reckless actions of a daring individual skating along Mbagathi Way while pulling a cart (mkokoteni) have sparked debate among Kenyans, with the majority arguing about the endangerment of other motorists' lives.

In a video clip that surfaced on Friday, February 23, the man carried his friend who was filming the incident as they sped along the busy road while avoiding vehicles at high speed along the busy road.

The passenger, captured on video, was seen urging his friend to slow down, expressing his discomfort with the situation.

"Hit the brakes," the passenger, who also had skates, appealed at one point.

"When will we stop?" he enquired as they attempted to engage in a speed chase with a motorbike.

The video elicited debate from Kenyans online over the duo's conduct and ill-advised behaviour.

"This is dangerous. These guys should be stopped."

"This guy takes  pure adrenaline shots for breakfast."

"If they are caught by traffic police, it's straight to the courtroom and charged with obstruction of traffic and endangering other road users," read some comments online.

The actions highlight the reckless behaviour exhibited by some road users which consequently leads to an increase in road accidents.

The latest data by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicates that 4,324 fatalities were recorded in 2023, with pedestrians accounting for the majority with 1,591 and motorcyclists following with 1,133 deaths.

To curb the behaviour, NTSA launched a campaign titled #UsalamaBarabarani (Safety on Roads) to sensitise users on road safety.

According to the Authority, the main causes of accidents included vehicles losing control, followed by lane indiscipline, and improper overtaking.
