In efforts to boost its revenues, Kenya Power has embarked on a plan to lease out its idle lands located in various parts of the country.

The plan was communicated on Tuesday, February 26, as the power transmission company invited bidders to handle the process.

This is the second time in four years that Kenya Power is seeking to raise cash through renting out its prime property

“Kenya Power invites tenders from interested bidders for the provision of proposed leasing out of surplus spaces on various company-owned parcels of land,” the company stated.

In an earlier notice, the company disclosed that it owned six parcels of prime land worth billions.

The prime pieces of land are located in Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri and Nairobi towns.

Tender commencement dates for interested bidders start on February 27 and end on March 26.

Kenya Power added that a pre-bid meeting will be held at Stima Plaza, Auditorium in Nairobi on March 6, starting at 11:00 am.

“Tender documents detailing the requirements may be obtained from the Kenya Power website www.kplc.co.ke,” bidders were informed.

On January 15, President William Ruto’s Cabinet announced a similar move for Kenya Railways stating that the government entity would rent out its idle land

The announcement was aligned with the Cabinet's approval of the Railway Amendment Bill, of 2024, which allowed private investors to bid on idle land to develop railway cities countrywide.

Already, the process has started in earnest with 425 acres of prime land within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) being used to create a Railway City.
