The Public Service Commission (PSC) on Tuesday announced that it was seeking a new Director General of Health, a position occupied by Patrick Amoth in an acting capacity for the last five years.

In a notice carried in a local daily, PSC revealed that it was also seeking to fill the position of Amoth's deputy.

The vacancies were advertised alongside 813 others the Commission moves to hire state officials across several government departments including Health, Agriculture and Mining.

Amoth ascended to the position in 2019 and has served in an acting capacity ever since, raising questions over the government's hesitancy to confirm him or hire a permanent occupant.

In April last year, the position raised concerns after reports emerged that Amoth had been confirmed as the official holder only for the Health Ministry to counter, insisting that he was still serving in an acting capacity.

Amoth was also not considered for the position despite Nakhumicha's promise to fill the position on October 31, 2022.

“When I look around the room, I can see that many of you here are in an acting capacity. This is something I am going to address soon,” she promised shortly after being appointed Health CS.

Amoth, alongside former Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, rose to prominence after guiding Kenyans through the pandemic which broke out in March 2020.

Due to his astute leadership and technical know-how, the World Health Organisation (WHO) appointed him as President of its Executive Board based in Geneva, Switzerland in June 2021.

How to Apply for the PSC Position

PSC revealed that individual details on the positions can be accessed on its website.

"Interested and qualified persons are required to make their applications online through the Commission website," read the notice in part.

Applicants have up to March 19 to express interest in the position.
