Meru County's political woes have continued to deepen after Deputy Governor (DG) Isaac Mutuma accused Governor Kawira Mwangaza of issuing threats and forcing him to resign from his post.
Speaking on Wednesday, February 28, Mutuma revealed that the governor has been sending threatening messages through her proxies, aimed to scare him into stepping down.
Elaborating on the situation within the county administration, the Director-General remarked that the work environment had become toxic for the employees. He underscored the necessity for relevant authorities to investigate the matter further.
"We are operating in a very hostile environment in Meru and as deputy governor, I have said time and again that things are escalating from bad to worse," Mutuma stated.
"Mama Governor through her proxies are sending threats to me, telling me that Mama is proposing that I resign and get the package to engage in other issues out there.”
Mutuma further lamented being excluded from several county meetings, which he claimed discussed major issues affecting Meru.
“I know that if I was truly and honestly needed in those meetings, then all these other recommendations that were done by this honourable house would have been implemented,” he added.
The two county heads have been at loggerheads since they entered the leadership on an independent ticket in August 2022, having disagreed on the leadership style in several situations.
The DG previously accused the governor of denying his office funding, adding that his security personnel was also withdrawn without receiving a notification. In addition to that, Mutuma further alleged that his office was moved from the county headquarters, where all other offices are situated.
“I wish to inform the good people of Meru County that the executive arm of the government led by Her Excellency Honourable Bishop Faith Kawira Mwangaza has since allocated the executive office of the Deputy Governor operations kitty,”
“The same has not been remitted to my office since February 2023, and as such, I have been running a public office with my own private money,” Mutuma lamented.
Governor Mwangaza has faced significant opposition, including facing impeachment twice, which she survived after the senate ruled in her favour.
