Meru residents on Tuesday took to the streets to protest the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Holding placards bearing the writings 'Governor ni Mama' which loosely translates to 'Our Preferred Choice for Governor is a Woman', the residents took turns condemning the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) who voted in favour of ousting the county chief.

The residents staged protests in Meru Town and paralysed operations along the Meru- Nairobi Highway.

“We know clearly what they said, that they will remove her from her seat even before we went to the ballot,” one resident could be heard chanting during the demos.

The residents claimed that the charges leveled against the Governor are trumped up and orchestrated by politicians harboring the fear that Mwangaza might win the 2027 Gubernatorial election.

The protestors want the Senate to deliver a favourable ruling on Mwangaza with the house set to determine her fate in due course.

The residents also want President Ruto to intervene and help the Governor whom they claim is being sabotaged by powerful politicians from Meru.

Mwangaza was impeached on October 25 after 59 members of the Meru County Assembly voted in favour of ousting her. No MCA opposed or abstained.

Governor Mwangaza is facing several allegations.

For instance; in the first charge, Governor Mwangaza is accused of misappropriation and misuse of public resources.  The county chief stands accused of paying salaries and advancing benefits to senior officers who did not render any services to the county.

Mwangaza has also been accused of nepotism. MCAs accused her of hiring 6 family members including her two sisters to senior positions.

The embattled Governor has also been accused of bullying county employees, contempt of court and illegally naming a public road after her husband without following the law.
