Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Wednesday, January 4, held a meeting with elected leaders from Meru County in a bid to have a harmonious working relationship among the county's top brass.
According to a statement shared by Gachagua, the five-hour-long meeting centred on trying to understand the problems facing the county and the stumbling blocks to unity.
Among the leaders present were Meru Senator and Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi, Imenti North Member of Parliament Raheem Dawood, and Woman Representative Elizabeth Karambu.
The DP affirmed his commitment to spearhead unity and harmony in the county and the Mount Kenya region by extension.
“This evening, I have held a five-hour discussion with all elected members of the National Assembly and the Senate from Meru County in an attempt to understand what is ailing our great County of Meru," Gachagua stated.
The meeting came days after Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza survived an impeachment attempt by members of county assembly on Friday, December 30.
Senate special committee led by Senator Boni Khalwale cleared her name and made a resolution that the accusations were not substantiated.
"All the 11 members agreed and recommended to this house that all the charges were not proved or substantiated," Khalwale stated.
The Governor took a low profile after surviving the ouster bid. "Give thanks in all circumstances; For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18," she quoted the Bible.
In December 2022, Mwangaza had reached out to DP Gachagua and President William Ruto seeking their intervention to calm the storm that had engulfed Meru County barely a month into her term in office.
"It is my prayer that God touches President Ruto and uses him to bring peace to Meru county," Mwangaza pleaded.
Gachagua, in his response, vowed to help in ironing out the challenges hindering unity, terming them as a barrier to development.
